THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE IDEAL 11 TEAM SELECTION FOR SEASON 2012 - 2013

The news source in itself could be debated if its reputable, English paper "The Sun" has released their "Ideal Champions League 11" for season 2012 - 2013". Apart from their choices - all top players - there is a stark contrast with the "Ideal 11" lists from last season.
Soccer 2013

Firstly, the list is dominated by the German Clubs Bayern Munich & Borussia Dortmund, both which will meet tomorrow in London in the Champions League Final. Secondly, there is just one Spanish player & that is FC Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez. Thirdly, the Spanish Club with most players is Malaga FC with goalkeeper Willy Caballero & defender Welington.

You may have noticed that "The Sun" leaves out Lionel Messi, but puts in Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo who is currently the leading Champions League goal scorer for season 2012-2013.

Here is the full list of names:

Willy Caballero; Lahm, Dante, Weligton, Schmelzer; Xavi Hernandez, Schweinsteiger, Götze; Lewandowski, Yilmaz & Cristiano Ronaldo.

As with all lists of these type they cause debate & never satisfy all the Footy punters. However, interesting how it does illustrate to some exact the "changing of the guard" or "shift in the European Football power" from Spanish Football to Germany.

Former
Liverpool
manager, Rafa
Benitez is
reportedly
close to
signing for
Napoli following rumours that a meeting
was held on Thursday in Rome between
Napoli directors and Benitez's agent,
Manuel Garcia Quillon, which brought them
closer to an agreement.
Former Valencia President Jaime Ortiz, is one
person who thinks it will be a great move.
Fabulous
- Benitez is a fabulous Coach, as with him at
Valencia we won two Liga titles, a UEFA Cup
and European Super Cup, Ortiz told Radio
Crc.
He is among the top tacticians in the world
in terms of trophies and has everything it
takes to be in charge of any top club.
While his contract as Chelsea Interim
Manager is set to expire despite lifting the
Europa League trophy, the Spaniard has also
been linked with Paris Saint-Germain.
- Benitez is not only a Coach, but also a
manager of teams. He is perfect for English
football because he wants to have a say in
every area of the club strategy, continued
former Valencia President Ortiz.
Motivate
- He is eager to make up for the poor
season he had at Inter. Napoli are an
important team and a big club, which is also
what Rafa thinks.
Benitez had a short stint at Inter, where he
succeeded Jose Mourinho. He failed to
motivate the players, and was sacked soon
after.

New
Manchester
United
manager,
David Moyes
is weighing
up a
£15million bid for Barcelona midfielder
Thiago Alcantara.
The United boss sees the Spanish
international, 22, as a possible replacement
for the retired Paul Scholes.
Keen to quit
Thiago has two years to go on his £30,000-
a-week Barca deal but is keen to quit after
falling out of favour with the Catalan giants.
An insider at Barcelona said Thiago is not
happy because of his lack of playing time
and wants to go to a club where he will get
regular first-team football.
Marginalized
Also, Barcelona manager, Tito Vilanova is
not a big fan and has marginalized Thiago
this season, preferring to play Cesc
Fabregas or Alex Song ahead of Thiago.
This is said to frustrate the midfielder,
because he knows he is good enough to
probably get into any other team in the
world.
Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City are
also keeping tabs on the player.

Real Madrid
manager Jose
Mourinho will
on June 2 seal
a four-year
contract with
his former
club Chelsea.
The deal, according to Daily Star is worth
£250,000 a week.
Mega deal
Mourinho will jet in the day after his final
game in charge of Real Madrid to seal his
mega deal.
That is a commitment of around £50m from
owner Roman Abramovich for the second
coming of The Special One.
Mourinho is so keen to get started in his
new job he will not waste any time after
Real's final game against Osasuna at the
Bernabeu.
He will be accompanied on the trip by his
fitness coach Rui Faria and goalkeeping
coach Silvino Louro.
But there is no prospect of Chelsea signing
Cristiano Ronaldo from Madrid as the
superstar's relationship with Mourinho has
broken down.
Salary
His salary this time is around three times
what he was paid when he first arrived at
the club in 2004.
Real Madrid and Mourinho, 50, confirmed
they will part company at the end of the
season.
And because the split has been mutually
agreed, Chelsea will not have to pay any
compensation to the Spanish giants.

Real Madrid
first choice
goalkeeper,
Diego Lopez
is reportedly
willing to ask
Real Madrid to
sell him this summer, following the
imminent departure of the man who
brought him in, Jose Mourinho.
The 31-year-old was brought back to the
Santiago Bernabeu during the winter
transfer window as cover for Iker Casillas,
who underwent surgery in January on a
fractured hand.
Starting spot
Despite holding on to the starting spot in
the team after Casillas' return to full fitness,
amid the latter's reported poor relationship
with Coach Jose Mourinho, Lopez is
reportedly keen to leave this summer.
The former Sevilla man apparently believes
that Mourinho's exit in the summer will
return Casillas to the regular starting spot
and relegate him to a bench role.
Options
Spanish sports paper, Mundo
Deportivo assess that Lopez believes he can
take a first-team spot elsewhere in Europe.
Lopez reportedly has two options open to
him - Milan in Serie A, or Mourinho's
rumoured next club, Chelsea in the Premier
League.

Benteke casts doubts over Villa future with Arsenal claim

Christian
Benteke has
cast doubts
over his
future at
Aston Villa,
by declaring again that he would consider
a move to Arsenal.
The Belgian striker enjoyed a great
campaign in the Premier League in his first
season, scoring 19 goals at the first attempt,
and a lot of big clubs have voiced an
interest in his services.
Temptation
But Benteke told a Belgian newspaper
Nieuwsblad, that he could be tempted to
leave if Villa received an offer from one of
the Premier League elite, especially Arsenal.
- If Aston Villa say I must stay, I won't
necessarily accept that. I do not in any way
want to feel I didn't get the most out of my
career, the striker said.
- If the chance comes up for me to join a
club like Arsenal, I am convinced that we
can reach a compromise where everybody
comes out a winner.'
Confidence
- I have asked my agent not to bother me
with transfer talk while I am away on
Belgium duty. It's now down to him to do
his job. I have known him since I was 14
years old, and I have complete confidence
in him.
Villa boss Paul Lambert has been steadfast
in his belief that his star man, who has three
years remaining on his contract, will still be
at the club next season.
Extension
The club are currently negotiating an
extension on a contract that has three years
left, and the statement could be a ruse to
get more money.
Due to the length of time left on the
contract, Benteke and his agent cannot
force a move, unless He refuses to sign a
new deal, in which case, Villa may be forced
to sell for a huge profit at the end of next
season.
Other clubs interested in Benteke include
Tottenham Hotspurs, Atletico Madrid,
Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea.

FC BARCELONA | THIAGO TO LEAVE BARCELONA

FC Barcelona has always preached they are different, that one of the elements they hold close & cultivate is to create local talent for the Club. It´s propaganda ,  as with most other Clubs.

FC Barcelona "home grown" young midfield talent Thiago Alcantra is to leave the Club because he can´t find a regular place. The irony & the truth is that FC Barcelona prefers to spent a whooping 60-70M€ on an outside & still unproven player in European Football like Neymar.

The father of Thiago, ex Brazilian International Mazinho, warned Barcelona early this season. Thaigo wishes to stay & play at FC Barcelona, but if he can´t get regular play & he cant continue evolving Thaigo will have to move elsewhere to grow.

Spanish Football

The player had a 90 M€ contract release clause, but because he has not played this season a "determined number of games", his contract release clause falls to 18 M€ & naturally this has made the midfielder "top prize" in the European signing market.

Latest news is that Thiago will be leaving FC Barcelona ´& that the player has an "agreement" elsewhere for next season. Bayern Munich is rumoured to be interested but everyone is pointing to England & concretely Manchester United which is rumoured to be preparing the 18M€ needed.

Thiago is an immense young Football talent & already a Spanish International,  the player is destined to be a great in European Football, but as with the insects FC Barcelona prefers to smash itself against the bright lights of others. The 60-70M€ price figure for Neymar is an "investment risk" when you have the "sure thing" in your back yard & free.

“We will not beg anybody to play for Nigeria” – Keshi not bothered by injuries, withdrawals

Coach Stephen Keshi has told Nigerians not
to panic as the Super Eagles prepare for
crucial 2014 World Cup qualifying games
and the Fifa Confederations Cup
tournament – all taking place in June.
A spate of injuries, first to Scotland-based
midfielder Reuben Gabriel and ace forward
Emmanuel Emenike, and lately to attacking
midfielders Kalu Uche and Victor Moses, had
caused anxiety in some quarters and is
being hyper-ventilated in public spaces and
a section of the media as 'problem in camp.'
But Keshi, who steered less-endowed Togo
to that country's only FIFA World Cup
qualification eight years ago, said he was
more than committed to leading his own
country to next year's finals in Brazil, no
matter the challenges.
"I am never one to run away from
challenges; I have confronted them head-
on all my life. I have very good relationship
with each and every of my players, with
mutual respect and regard being the
bedrock.
"The players that we have invited for these
matches are patriots and are always ready
to defend the green-white-green. We have
16 players here now and team spirit is
high. Everyone wants to play. What we will
certainly not do is to beg anyone to play
for Nigeria".
Nigeria's longest-serving
captain said the late
arrival of some players is to be expected at
this time of the season: "Most of the
players have just concluded very gruelling
seasons and have need to sort out personal
issues, and of course there are talks to hold
ahead of next season. These talks have to
be done now considering that the players
would be away for about seven weeks, on
duty for Nigeria."
The team's Novina Hotel camp in
Nuremberg swelled on Wednesday
morning with the arrivals of Germany-
based striker Joseph Akpala and Ukraine-
based forward Babatunde Michael.
Portugal-based John Ogu was being
expected on Wednesday night, while
defenders Kenneth Omeruo and Elderson
Echiejile, as well as midfielder Nnamdi
Oduamadi are expected in camp on
Thursday.
First-choice goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama,
based in Israel, is expected on Friday.
Scotland-based stopper Efe Ambrose and
Italy-based midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has
been granted permission to arrive on
Saturday due to club commitments.
Ukraine-based forward Brown Ideye will
join the team in Texas, USA while Ahmed
Musa and Fegor Ogude will join the squad
in Frankfurt after the friendly with Mexico
in America, also due to club commitments.
The team will fly out of Frankfurt on
Tuesday morning aboard a Lufthansa
Airline aircraft, and will arrive in Houston,
Texas in the evening. Abode is the classy
The Westin Galleria and Westin Oaks.

Santos reject second Barcelona bid for Neymar

The vice-president of Santos, Odilio
Rodrigues, has confirmed that the Brazilian
club has rejected Barcelona's second bid,
for their star forward Neymar.
It is looking increasingly possible, that the
attacker would be lining up along with
Lionel Messi at the Nou Camp, but Santos
are not making it easy, after they threw out
the Catalans' €20 million fee offer.
"Santos analysed
[Barca's] bid that we
received and it doesn't meet our
estimation," he told reporters. "It was not
accepted.
"We only had only one offer on the table
[previously] and the club's committee
understands that it is not what we want.
Neymar remains part of the club – he has a
contract running until 2014."
It is indeed a dicey situation, as Neymar's
current contract runs out next year and he
can leave the club on a free. However,
Rodrigues revealed that Barca's rivals, Real
Madrid, were also interested in the forward.
"Real Madrid are interested, but we only
speak about facts," he said.

REAL MADRID | TRANSFER NEWS - GOSSIP FOR SEASON 2013-2014

Spanish Sports paper "Marca" has put on its front cover today a story titled "The plans of Florentino" discussing the wishes & possible signing targets the Real Madrid CF has for next season 2013 - 2014.
Soccer Spain 2013

With the above image courtesy of the Spanish paper, they speculate that President Florentino & Real Madrid will be going for: Neymar, Lewandowski, Bale, Isco, Carvajal & Casemiro.

Studying other sources & International press Real Madrid can basically forget about the first two:
  • Neymar will finally end up in FC Barcelona, this is what the player desires & has signed a pre-agreement to this effect. What Real Madrid has managed to do is "stick it up" Barça by lifting the initial transfer offer from 40 to 60 M€ just by their "interference". One can say that indirectly Real Madrid has been strategically successful.
  • Lewandowski will go to Bayern Munich, this is the wish & desire of the Polish forward. Real Madrid can forget this option,  & now have Napoles Cavani as their main striker target.
The rest are still open:
  • According to UK press, Real Madrid will make an initial 50M€ to Tottenham Hotspurs for Gareth Bale & offer a player to chose from; Higuain, Di Maria, Coentrao, Pepe etc. This will be a very difficult operation & will go on all summer. We need to watch how it all develops.
  • Malaga FC has priced its midfielder Isco at 35M€. Negotiations will continue.
  • Carvajal is an option but it ain´t too clear. The next new Coach ( Carlo Ancelotti ) will have a big say here.
  • Cashemiro looks set to stay at Real Madrid. The Brazilian has given good sensations & his price is 6M€ that Sao Paolo will receive in the operation.

There are more names floating around & as always a "surprise" will arise in coming weeks or months , but this is how it is for now. It may change tomorrow & I have no doubt that it will.

REAL MADRID | EDINSON CAVANI THE CHOICE OF ANCELOTTI

REAL MADRID | EDINSON CAVANI THE CHOICE OF ANCELOTTI

Edinson Cavani has scored 29 goals in 34 games this season & seems the striker that Real Madrid wishes for next season. Current Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Higuain looks all set to leave for Juventus ( or England ) & there will be a place for the Napoles Uruguayan International.

News from Italy & locally cite that current Paris St Germain Coach - & next Real Madrid Coach - Carlo Ancelotti has called personally the representative of Cavani to let him know that he & Real Madrid count on his player for next season. Plus days back the Real Madrid Director General Jose Sanchez flew to Napoles to tell the player of his Clubs interest for his services.
Soccer Spain 2013

Meanwhile the Italian Club Napoles is "auctioning" the player in order to get the most money possible from a transfer. The Club has let known to Real Madrid that English Club Manchester City is already negotiating for their player. The advantage that Real Madrid has in this "tug-of-war" operation is that it seems Cavani wants to play at Real Madrid & not in England.  Either way the transfer price will be high as speculation puts it around the 35-40M€ mark. No doubt Real Madrid will force downward & may attempt to put in a player.

If all the above is true, Cavani will have a big say on his future. Stay tuned!

Mario Gotze ruled out of Champions League final

Borussia
Dortmund have confirmed that Mario Gotze,
will miss Saturday's Champions League final
against Bayern Munich.
The German midfielder tore his hamstring
during the semi-final clash against Real
Madrid and has been fighting to be fit for
the Wembley showdown. However, his
current club say he won't be available for
the match against his future employers.
"The final was my big
goal and I have fought
hard to make it over the past few weeks,"
Gotze said in the press release.
"I am unbelievably sorry for not being
being able to help the team in this
important game. I have full confidence in
the team and will of course travel to
London to support them on the pitch."
Jurgen Klopp may also be without defender
Mats Hummels, who is also nursing an ankle
injury, but remains confident of making it
in time for the game.
He told Bild magazine: "Nothing is torn so it
is not as bad as first feared. I'm confident
I'll be ready for the final."

Ancelotti has a better relationship with his players than Mourinho – Ibrahimovic

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has revealed that he
rates Carlo Ancelotti ahead of Jose
Mourinho and hopes that the Italian
manager remains at Paris Saint-Germain,
amidst speculation that he could replace
Mourinho at Real Madrid.
"I have a fantastic relationship with
Ancelotti and I don't want him to leave the
club," the Sweden international said at a
press conference.
"He is the only coach I
have had who has such
an excellent rapport with his players, even
more so than Jose Mourinho.
"He always explains his decisions to the
players when he benches someone. When
we won the title, he gathered us in a small
room to thank us personally and he had a
personal message for all of us.
"He has contributed a lot to PSG's project
and has already built a lot here. If he leaves,
seven or eight more of the staff could go.
He would leave a huge void if he left and
we all want him to stay put."

England braced for Mourinho’s Chelsea return

Jose Mourinho looks set
to be welcomed back to Chelsea with
open arms, but his reputation has been
sullied during his three-year stint at Real
Madrid and he will return to Stamford
Bridge with several thorny issues to
address.
Having been released from his contract
by Madrid, the charismatic but
controversial Portuguese is now widely
expected to return to Chelsea, with some
British bookmakers offering odds of
20/1 on that he does so.
Chelsea's fans have already made their
feelings known about the prospect of
his return, having lustily chanted his
name on several occasions during the
final weeks of the season.
His previous stint at the club, between
2004 and 2007, saw Chelsea emerge as
the dominant force in English football
and even their recent continental
successes carried echoes of his impact.
Jose Mourinho
Jose Mourinho
Seven different managers will have
been and gone by the end of the
campaign, but the Europa League
winners remain very much a Mourinho
team — dogged, compact, and still
bossed by Mourinho loyalists such as
Petr Cech, Frank Lampard and captain
John Terry.
Mourinho left after his relationship with
owner Roman Abramovich broke down
and, in his subsequent spell at Inter
Milan, he confirmed his status as one of
the great managers of modern times by
leading the club to league, cup and
Champions League glory in 2010.
It is nonetheless a chastened Mourinho
who will return to London.
He found in Italy that the local media did
not lap up his pot-stirring quite as
enthusiastically as their English
counterparts had, and in Spain things
were even worse.
After Madrid went out of the Champions
League following a one-sided semi-final
loss to Borussia Dortmund, he told
reporters: "In Spain, some people hate
me; many of you in this room."
It has long been part of Mourinho's
strategy to portray himself as a victim,
but any sympathy for him is mitigated
by the list of misdemeanours he has
perpetrated in the Spanish capital.
The image of Mourinho poking then
Barcelona assistant Tito Vilanova in the
eye during the Spanish Super Cup in
August 2011 left an indelible stain on his
reputation, and his long dispute with
club icon Iker Casillas this season saw
him alienate half the Madrid changing
room.
His antics prompted Manchester United
director Bobby Charlton to observe that
a "United manager wouldn't do that",
and Mourinho's off-pitch conduct was
one of the factors that pushed the Old
Trafford club to look elsewhere for the
successor to Alex Ferguson.
Mourinho's desire to succeed Ferguson
has long been apparent and the 50-
year-old was lampooned in the British
media for adopting what was seen as an
uncharacteristically obsequious tone
after his side's victory over United in the
Champions League last 16.
As well as the worry that he may still
harbour ambitions to coach United,
Chelsea's fans must also hope he is able
to reconstruct a successful working
partnership with Abramovich.
The Portuguese would also have to
submit to the authority of sporting
director Michael Emenalo, a close
Abramovich ally who oversees first-
team affairs.
Despite the potential for fireworks,
Chelsea fans believe Mourinho feels
compelled to come back.
"The way he left was such a shock — it
almost felt like a bereavement," Chelsea
Supporters' Group chair Trizia Fiorellino
told Britain's Press Association.
"Both supporters and Jose himself think
that there is unfinished business, which
is why, I think, he is so keen to return."
Several of Mourinho's successors
struggled to dismantle the ageing team
that he had created, but interim coach
Rafael Benitez has moved the squad
forward during his turbulent six-month
spell in charge.
The influential Terry is no longer
guaranteed a first-team place, while
Fernando Torres looks a far more potent
force than the spectre-like figure who
wore the number nine shirt like a
millstone in his first season and a half at
the club.
In Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Oscar,
Chelsea also possess three of the most
gifted creative midfielders in the
country, although Mourinho, who has
always favoured powerful, counter-
attacking football, might be reluctant to
fit all three into the same team.
Whatever happens, with Mourinho at the
reins, it would be anything but dull.

Neymar ready to sign for Barcelona in July

Last week Neymar signed a
revised agreement within
which he committed to join
up with barcelona once representing Brazil
in June's Confederations Cup, Brazilian
newspaper 'O Globo' is saying.
This means that Sunday's clash
between santos and Flamengo within
the gap weekend of the new Brazilian Série
A season might be the 21-year-old's
last appearance for his childhood club.
However, santos is believed to be in
talks regarding the chance of
Neymar wearing on the shirt one last
time after playing the Confederations
Cup so as to mention adios to his fans.
Neymar's contract with santos expires in
2014 and includes a €65
million release clause. However, the
club may stand to lose him for free of
charge if it does not offload him this
summer and instead permits him to run
down his deal. in keeping with 'O Globo', the
starlet's move to the Catalan capital can
be confirmed as early
as Wednesday, once the santos board meets
to analyse Barça's latest offer.
While the mercurial striker has been quoted
as demanding that he needs to remain in
Brazil, both the santos coach, Muricy
Ramalho, and also the Brazilian
club's administrators have acknowledged
that Neymar is destined to play in Spain.

22 Teams Already Qualified for 2013-14 UEFA Champions League

ATLETICO DE MADRID | WHO WILL REPLACE FALCAO ?

ATLETICO DE MADRID | WHO WILL REPLACE FALCAO ?

It seems clear that Atletico de Madrid forward Radamel Falcao will be leaving at the end of the season. What´s not confirmed is where but there are a few Clubs being mentioned, Monaco, Chelsea FC, Manchester City & Paris St Germain, with the first two more favourite than the others.
Soccer 2013

Atletico de Madrid obviously have to work - & have been - to find a substitute forward that will fill the "big" space that Falcao will leave vacant. Names are already been sounding & are appearing in Football press.

First name to hit the papers was FC Barcelona forward David Villa, but it seems that the Spanish International will go to the English Premier League with Tottenham Hotspurs or Arsenal FC battling out between themselves to convince the player.

Second name that is sounding is Luis Suarez of Liverpool FC, an old desire of Atletico de Madrid. Apparently there are negotiations going on but money maybe a serious obstacle.

Thirdly, Spanish International & Sevilla FC forward Alvaro Negredo has offered himself for next season as he desires to play in Champions League & is an option.

Lastly, the name of Brazilian International & Russian Club Zenit forward Hulk has appeared on the scene. The Brazilian is not happy in Russia & looks favourably a move to Liga. The big obstacle here is the 60M€ that Zenit paid recently for the player.

In conclusion there are two current viable options: Luis Suarez & Alvaro Negredo. Stay tuned!

Chelsea stop Mikel, Moses from Mexico match

Having experienced a gruelling football
season with Chelsea, Nigerian duo, Jon
Mikel Obi and Victor Moses have pleaded
with Coach Stephen Keshi to leave them
out of the exhibition match against
Mexico on May 31
An official of the
Nigeria Football
Federation (NFF)
revealed that
Mikel has asked to
be excused from
the tune-up match in order to rest and
take care of personal issues.
"Mikel has said he will prefer to be left
out of the friendly game against Mexico
later this month. He says he will want to
just take a rest after a long season with
Chelsea and also take care of personal
matters at the same time," said the
federation official on Tuesday.
However the 26-year-old midfielder is
said not to have made mention of being
excluded from the FIFA 2014 World Cup
qualifiers against Kenya and Namibia in
June.
"Nothing has been said about the World
Cup qualifiers. He has only asked to be
left out of the friendly against Mexico,"
the official stated.
Already, the trio of Victor Moses, Kalu
Uche and Gabriel Reuben have opted out
of the Nigeria squad ahead of the FFIFA
World Cup qualifiers and Confederations
Cup citing injury concerns.

PSG President Rejects Ancelotti’s Real Madrid Move

Paris St Germain coach, Carlo
Ancelotti, has asked to leave for
Madrid but the club president
Nasser Al-Khelaifi says the
Italian-born coach must respect
his contract with the French club.
Ancelotti told the club he wants to
leave at the end of the season
after leading the team to their first
French league title in 19 years.
Al-khelaifi said he had a meeting
with Ancelotti on his request to
leave PSG and go ahead to coach
Spanish side Real Madrid but he
was very clear with Ancelotti on
the move by reminding him that
he still has a year to go in his
contract with PSG.
Al-khelaifi said it is not the
problem of the French club but the
problem of Ancelotti if he goes
against the agreed contract and
heads to Real Madrid because
contracts have to be respected.
He adds that PSG wants to keep
him and there's a proposition to
further extend his contract for
another year, but if he still wants
to leave after the remaining one
year then he can leave.
"It's his problem, it is not our
problem because it is in his
contract and everyone has to
respect contracts. We want to
keep him and we also proposed to
renew the contract for another
year, but he can leave."
Ancelotti joined PSG, who are
owned by Qatar Sports
Investments (QSI), in December
2011, leading them to their first
French league title since 1994 last
weekend.
The 53-year-old won league titles
with PSG, AC Milan and Chelsea, and
also took the Italian club to the
Champions League title in 2003
and 2007.
His contract at PSG was
automatically renewed by one
year until June next year when
the club secured a Champions
League spot for next season.

Premier League team of the season

Premier League fans
have been treated to dazzling displays
from some of the world's best players
over the last nine months. And with the
season at an end, AFP London Sports
Desk unveils its team of the year:
GOALKEEPER
Asmir Begovic (Stoke/BIH)
The £15 million-rated Bosnian
underlined why the likes of Arsenal and
Liverpool have been linked with a close-
season move for him as he produced a
series of fine performances, played all
38 league games and managed to keep
12 clean-sheets in a struggling side.
DEFENDERS
Pablo Zabaleta (Man City/ARG)
In a season of underachievement at
Eastlands, the Argentina right-back was
one of the few to emerge with any
credit. His muscular approach frustrated
many wingers and he also found time to
charge forward to good effect.
Rio Ferdinand (Man Utd/ENG)
The 34-year-old's return to form defied
critics who claimed he no longer had the
pace to play at the highest level. Finally
pain-free thanks to an intricate fitness
programme, the centre-back may have
snubbed an England recall but he was an
assured presence as United romped to
the title.
Jan Vertonghen
(Tottenham/BEL)
Relatively
unheralded
when he arrived
from Ajax last
year, the
versatile Belgian
has emerged as
one of the best
defenders in the league. Capable of
filling in at full-back, he shone brightest
at centre-back and chipped in with six
valuable goals.
Leighton Baines (Everton/ENG)
Long regarded as a key component of
Everton's back-four, the dynamic left-
back enjoyed the best season of his
career and also impressed for England.
Could follow David Moyes to Manchester
United if the departing Toffees boss
gets his way.
MIDFIELDERS
Juan Mata (Chelsea/ESP)
The Spaniard thrived as the Blues played
a more fluid style designed to showcase
Mata's talents. As well as an eye for a
killer pass, Mata, who netted 20 times
this term, also displayed stamina as he
featured in 66 of Chelsea's 69 matches
during a marathon campaign that
brought third place and Europa League
glory.
Michael Carrick (Man Utd/ENG)
After spending much of his time at Old
Trafford as the forgotten man in
United's midfield, Carrick finally took
centre-stage with the kind of influential
displays his admirers have always felt
him capable of. The 31-year-old's
smooth passing and astute reading of
the game were pivotal to United's title
success, especially given the erratic form
of his fellow midfielders.
Santi Cazorla (Arsenal/ESP)
While many of Arsene Wenger's recent
overseas signings have failed to adapt
to the Premier League, there was no
questioning the impact of the
diminutive Spaniard following his £15
million move from Malaga.
Whether playing wide or in a more
central role, the 28-year-old was at the
heart of all Arsenal's best moments,
scoring 12 times including a hat-trick at
Reading, as they finished the season
strongly and took fourth place.
Gareth Bale (Tottenham/WAL)
Almost single-handedly kept his team in
the race to qualify for the Champions
League with a series of brilliant displays
and jaw-dropping goals that earned him
both the Players' and Football Writers'
Player of the Year awards.
The Wales winger was granted more
freedom to play in-field by Spurs boss
Andre Villas-Boas and he responded
with 26 goals, many of them long-range
strikes and none more remarkable than
the last-minute winner against West Ham
that illuminated a dank night at Upton
Park in February.
FORWARDS
Michu (Swansea/ESP)
Unquestionably the bargain of the
season, Michu, who cost just £2 million
from Rayo Vallecano, announced his
arrival in the Premier League with two
goals on his debut in a 5-0 win at QPR
and never looked back. The Spaniard
ended the season with 22 goals,
including one at Wembley as Swansea
beat Bradford 5-0 in the League Cup
final to win the first major trophy in
their 100-year history.
Robin van Persie (Man Utd/NED)
After losing the title on goal difference
last season, United boss Alex Ferguson
responded by prising the Dutch star
away from Arsenal just as champions
Manchester City were prepared to
pounce and in the process effectively
regained the Premier League crown
before a ball was even kicked.
The £24 million deal revitalised United as
van Persie scored on his Old Trafford
debut against Fulham, netted a hat-trick
in his third match at Southampton and
went on to finish as the league's top
scorer with 26 goals. No wonder
Ferguson hailed him as the most
significant signing since his swoop for
Eric Cantona.

Ferguson wins managers’ award

Outgoing Manchester United
manager Alex Ferguson heads into
retirement with the Premier League
manager of the year award.
Ferguson picked up the League Manager
Association's honour on Monday.
At the reception the 71-year-old said he
was relieved celebrations to mark his
retirement were over.
"It has been overwhelming," he told the
awards dinner in London 24 hours after
his last match in charge of United,
Sunday's 5-5 draw at West Brom.
"The club has been fantastic and
congratulations to West Brom with the
way they handled yesterday.
In a way I am glad it is all over now –
because it has been a very hard week.
"I think (West Brom manager) Steve
Clarke should get an award because
anyone who scores five against United
deserves it."

REAL MADRID NEGOCIATING FOR LEWANDOWSKI - ISCO ?

Spanish radio station "Cadena Ser" gave the news last night during its late night Football Show that Spanish Football Club Real Madrid CF was in negotiations with Borussia Dortmund & Malaga FC. The players in question are respectively Polish forward Robert Lewandowski & Spanish midfielder Isco.

According to the radio station German Club Borrusia Dortmund has approached Real Madrid because they wish to avoid making local rival Bayern Munich stronger & would prefer to sell elsewhere.

The Isco case comes because it is speculated that Real Madrid may want to sell Luka Modric this summer as part of another operation & Isco would make an excellent substitute.

Apart from the news that both players have half of Europe looking at signing them & thus making successful the operations are difficult & very costly, the Spanish radio station in question is "flying out rumours" lately due to stiff competition between media channels & thus maybe looking for marketing exposure.

With the season nearly over, signings & transfers news will take over the front pages & media channels in the coming months & all news must be taken with a "grain of salt". We will be reading & hearing lots of rumours.

Stay tuned!

SPANISH SOCCER | LIGA | ROUND 36 MONDAY GAME RESULT

Spanish Football match tonight, the last game of Round 36 of Liga. A do or die affair for Real Mallorca in that, if they lost tonight they mathematically would be relegated to the Spanish 2º Division.

The final result - score - ended Real Mallorca 1 - Real Betis 0, which keeps the options open for Real Mallorca in their desperate attempt to save themselves with just two more games of Liga left for this season. The endeavour will be difficult, I would say nearly impossible, but as the saying goes, where there is hope ...

Soccer Spain Liga 2013

The match of the season for Mallorca tonight for all the above reasons & they were quite frankly brilliant in focusing on the objective & the cause. Every Football trick was a viable option, from defending with everyone back, annoying tackles to the opposite team to cut down their Football, counter-attacks, long-balls & time wasting. All was fair in the Football war...

The winning goal came from a Betis defensive lapse that allowed Hemed to score for Mallorca in the 21st min. From here onwards it was sweat, rugged Football work & lots of nerves. On the edge Football that had all the local fans biting their finger nails & I would doubt some their toe-nails. In the end a vital victory & "Liga saving" three points.

Mallorca lives tonight in Liga to fight another Round.

REAL MADRID PRESIDENT ANNOUNCES MOURINHO EXIT

Real Madrid CF President Florentino Perez gave a press conference this afternoon with double motive:
  • to announce that current Coach Jose Mourinho will leave,
  • that he will be running for re-election for the Club Presidency.

Real Madrid 2013

Both are not new at all, simply the President formalized what we all suspected months back. The Real Madrid CF Presidential elections will be the 16th of June, & curiously Perez has´nt any opponents as yet. The man has managed to maintain a "squeaky clean" image amongst all the turmoil.

As for José Mourinho the Coach finishes the 30th of June & the Club & Coach have come to a mutual & friendly agreement to end their professional relationship. President Perez added that Mourinho, who still had 2 more years of contract, thought it was best for the Club that he leave & Perez has not disagreed with him on this point. President Perez has added that the Club has no one as yet in mind to Coach the Club next season, but we know that this is not true at all & these are the candidates:

1. option : Carlo Ancelotti, if this fails
2. option : Jupp Heynckes

I would image that many players & their Spanish media allies will be celebrating with champagne tonight at the news that Mourinho is leaving. As mentioned here many a time the only "glue" that keeps everything together & happy : Club, Coach, Players, Media , fans etc. is winning & this year in the titles area it has been zero for Real Madrid.
